Farewells (작별 인사)

Farewells (작별 인사) are essential expressions for saying goodbye in Korean. The form you use depends on who is staying and who is leaving.

Basic Structure

Two Main Patterns

When YOU are staying:

  • 안녕히 가세요 (Go peacefully)
  • Said to the person leaving

When YOU are leaving:

  • 안녕히 계세요 (Stay peacefully)
  • Said to the person staying

Key difference: The verb changes based on your position

Standard Farewells

안녕히 가세요 - Goodbye (to person leaving)

Structure: 안녕히 (peacefully) + 가세요 (go)

Use when:

  • You are staying
  • The other person is leaving
  • Formal/polite situations

Formality levels:
